Jean:    From a business plan, there are related issues, on of those being the retention of people. Is there a relationship between space and retention?

Mary Joyce:    One of the challenges we are facing is the open versus closed office and whether this is a functional need or a hierarchical need. We are not a hierarchical company. I look at new space, I don't know if we want to complicate new space use with private offices. It doesn't support the work of team managers. Nevertheless, how do you make the cultural change when people are set in how and where they work? While the groups of people I work with are innovators, when you get down deep inside them, there is still a sense of necessity about their space, how they want it to be theirs. I can't just change their mind.
